Patterns of Control speaks about the degrees of regulation evident within gardening practices and methods of incorporating plants into urban landscapes. This particular exploration stems from the approach utilized in traditional Japanese gardens to ensure every audience member experiences the garden in the same manner. The photographs examine moments where this sense of control is disrupted. Allowing nature to become the ultimate backdrop for this series begins to highlight systematic and cultural differences that exist between Japan and the United States and their relationships to nature. By attempting to standardize the viewer's perspective in the Japanese garden does it standardize the way we think and feel about nature?
